Humid air, distant city
Lights blur in the dark
At 11:35 PM on Friday, May 9, 2025, I'm cruising at 67 mph through the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina. The night is warm and humid, with the temperature holding steady at 77°F (25°C). The sky is overcast, casting a muted glow over the landscape.
The road ahead is flanked by dense patches of trees, their silhouettes barely discernible against the dark sky. Occasionally, the headlights catch glimpses of small residential areas nestled among the foliage, their windows emitting a soft, welcoming light. The air is thick with moisture, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers and damp earth.
The hum of the tires on the asphalt is accompanied by the distant sounds of nocturnal wildlife—crickets chirping and the occasional rustle of leaves as a night creature moves through the underbrush. The road is relatively quiet, with only a few other vehicles sharing the journey, their headlights appearing as fleeting beams in the rearview mirror.
As I continue along this stretch, the combination of the warm, humid air and the rhythmic sounds of the night create a serene atmosphere, making the drive through Charleston's outskirts a peaceful experience.
